City information

The town’s history:

Archaeological research shows that Suceava was populated starting from the Palaeolithic period. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries the territory was inhabited by the free Dacians and the archaeological diggings show that the type of houses back then had roman influence.
In the middle ages, the town was populated by Romanians, but also Germans, Hungarians, Armenians, the latter having the right to choose their own ruler.

In the 14th century in the yar 1388, Suceava is mentioned as the capital of Moldavia. While Petru I (1395-1391) ruled, the fortress of Suceava had become the main fortress of Moldavia and this quality remained during the reign of Aron Voda (1592-1595), Stefan Razvan (1595) and Movilesti. During Alexandru Lapusneanu’s ruling, the royal residence was moved to Iasi.

Near the town there are two fortresses: an older one, at Scheia, and a newer one which can still be seen today. Suceava has developed between these two fortresses. The royal residence has had an important role in the political life of Moldavia for three centuries.

Suceava knew a booming period during the ruling of Stefan cel Mare (1437-1504) who consolidated the royal residence, built new buildings and got involved in its economic and cultural life.
In 1476, the Muslim ruler Mohamed II tried to conquer the fortress but he could not defeat the Moldavians.
In 1497 fora period of 21 days, the Polack’s guns hit the walls of the fortress but Suceava was never conquered by gun power.

In 1775, due to its neutral attitude during the conflict between Turkey and Russia (1768-1774), Austria received a part of the Moldavian territory ( Bucovina) which also included Suceava. For almost a century, this territory was under Hapsburg ruling and called Bucovina. Bucovina was divided into two lands: Suceava and Cernauti. In 1868, Suceava became county capital.
After WW2, Suceava meets a booming economic and social period under the communist regime due to the fast industrialization. Thus, many new neighbourhoods and buildings of public utility were constructed.

Bucovina’s business card is its tourism because on a small surface there 94 churches and monasteries, of which 7 are listed as UNESCO patrimony, 92 creation centres, 14 museums and 4 memorial houses. Here you will find summer and winter sports facilities, as well for fishing and hunting.
As the county capital, Suceava is an excellent starting point for all these destinations.
